JAMES W. GOERG MS, INC.
LICENSED PSYCHOLOGIST ASSOCIATE
I have a direct yet nurturing style, engaging curiosity, and a deepening awareness of one’s own perception of their internal and external world, and how that influences relationships with ourselves and others.
I strongly believe the therapeutic relationship is the foundation for the work and processes we engage in together. By creating a safe environment to explore collaboratively, I help build a sense of confidence, honesty, and mutual trust with clients. My approach is grounded in authenticity, awareness, heart, humor and understanding, augmented by decades of training, education, and experience.
As we enter into a therapeutic relationship and begin our work together, we’ll discover, explore and engage with what emerges in the ever-dynamic moment.
My approach to individual-based therapy incorporates interpersonal and somatic therapies, systemic interactions, psychodynamic influences and cognitive behavioral therapy. Throughout this process, I integrate and encourage mindfulness practices to accelerate a deepening awareness of oneself.
In the context of my couples-based therapeutic approach, I help couples navigate the inherent tension that exists between wanting to be the same and different, in the same moment. The goal isn’t to avoid tension, but rather to learn to self-soothe, lean into anxiety, empathize with your partner, and connect in a more intimate, vulnerable and honest way.
Integrating the ever-evolving landscape of psychological research, I re-frame relationship difficulties not as a sign of failure, but as natural and normal in the development of a couples’ relationship. To navigate these moments, I utilize various methods to help you better understand your own true thoughts, feelings, and desires.
We’ll practice how to identify patterns we tend to re-play and re-enact from our past, how to avoid personalizing what your partner says and how to empathize with your partner’s experience during a disagreement without escalating the difference or avoiding the situation and invalidating your own experience.
Whether in an individual or couples-based setting, therapy is complex, nuanced and demands a lifetime of learning, growth and reflection. I encourage inquiries from prospective clients interested in working together.
I also bill out of network when the client's plan provides out-of-network coverage. In the event that none of these are options, I am also able to negotiate a flat pay agreement to cover my services.
